Change your address online
One of the most important things you need to do when you move to a new home is register your change of address with the post office. If the thought of having to go down to a busy post office and waiting on a long makes you feel apprehensive, never fear! The post office has made things easy for you with their online change of address form. First, go to www.usps.com/moversguide and read the important privacy statement and disclosure. Once you have read that, click to continue, this will take you to the online form. On the form, you will have to let the post office know whether your move is permanent or temporary (a temporary address means that you will return to your primary address within 12 months). Then you will be asked when the post office should begin forwarding your mail. Please keep in mind that it may take close to 10 days for the post office to process your request, so make sure to factor that in to your date selection. You will also be asked what type of move you are undertaking. Is it an individual move, where just your mail would be forwarded, or is it a family move, where all names associated with the address will be forwarded? If you are a business, there is an option for that as well. Finally you will fill in all you old and new address. If the residence you are moving into was built within six months of the move in, please make sure to check the box so the post office can properly register the address. Finally you’ll pay the one-dollar fee required. That’s it. The mail forwarding is for 6 months, which should give you plenty of time to make sure that everyone who needs your new address has it. If you need more time you can always file for an extension.Verity Van Lines is the premier Long Island moving company with over 100 years of experience in both local and long distance moves.
