Post Move Blues

Coping With The Post Move Blues

Moving to a new home brings with it many changes — some positive and some negative. For some, moving away from home, friends and family can be very unsettling; leaving them with a sense of unease and loss. If you think you may be suffering from the post-move blues, you’re not alone; it’s quite a common occurrence. Here are some great strategies to help you get up and going again.

  • Moving is not the end: Realize that just because you moved away from friends and family, that doesn’t mean you’ll never see them again. If you’re feeling lonely or unsettled, give a loved one a call and perhaps arrange a possible time for a visit/trip to see them. Finally, with today’s technology, a face to face conversation can happen via Wi-Fi; hook up the internet in your new home and make a call!
  • Moving is the beginning of something new: Having a positive mindset is critical to fighting the post-move blues. If your move is something that gets you and your family closer to their goals, then make sure you reinforce that to yourself by thinking of all the positive things the move will do. If your move is more a matter of circumstance rather than choice, try to think about the positive opportunities that come with starting over.
  • Meet new people: It’s jarring to end up in a new town where you may not know anyone. To ease this, take a walk out your front door and begin introducing yourselves to neighbors. If you don’t know what to talk about, ask simple questions such as “where’s a great place to eat around here?” or “where is the closest grocery store.” These easy conversation starters can open to door to much bigger discussions — possibly new friendships.
  • Settle in at work: While we don’t advise throwing yourself entirely into work and forgetting your home and family, a small dose of diving in and getting down to business will help dispel those post-move blues. Make sure to get to know your co-workers, who you will be spending a great deal of time with you.
